Could “Sopa” Throw The Baby Out With The Bath Water?

Many internet marketers watch & wait for more on the Sopa decision. It sounds like we will hear more on the 21st of this month. So what does Sopa stand for anyway? Stop Online Piracy Act. Sound simple enough to eradicate copyright infringement, but is it? Will it effect Americans or the whole internet worldwide?

After starting to hear about this across the web, you know the usual places like Facebook and YouTube, I thought I would mention this here too because as internet entrepreneurs it may have far reaching ramifications for our online websites. We will have to wait and see what comes out on the 21st of December. Talk of shutting down YouTube or Face is ludicrous! This whole debarkle also brings to mind just one major reason why to build a website for yourself to have full control of it. Some people opt for building a marketing website business SOLELY on Facebook. What happens if they change the rules or go down?

Recently it was the Google algorithm update named Panda that gave some web businesses a shake up, now we have Sopa in the winds. From my point of view, if it was to improve or eradicate piracy and copyright infringement across the web this would be a positive thing. Many sites using shady, poor quality practices found they got into trouble following the Panda update. Google was trying to fight back, this is another “policeman”. As online marketers trying to run reputable, quality businesses on the web, there is nothing worse than having people steal your own unique, original content! Scraper sites suck too! Trouble is this new law MAY impact on more online properties than it should – go overboard, into censorship not just copyright. Time will tell.
